Education in Black America
Education has been a large debate and issue amongst the African American community since we have been allowed into schools. The US Department of Education says that there was about a 9.9% drop out rate among 16-24 year olds in 2008 versus 19.1% in 1980. In March of 1970, 56% of the African American population had less than a high school diploma, 28% graduated from high school, 8% had some college education or an Associate’s degree, and 8% had a bachelor’s degree or higher. According to the US Census, in June 2007, 82% of 25+ year olds have at least a high school diploma versus 14% in 1950, 19% have a bachelor’s degree or higher versus 2% in 1950. 1.2 million Blacks have advanced degrees (master’s, doctorates, medical, or law, this is only 2.9% of the total African American population. African immigrants are more likely to have a college degree, 43.8% do, than the US population as a whole (23.1%). As of March 2008, 10% of Blacks have less than a high school diploma, 35% graduated from high school, 31% had some college or an Associate’s degree, and 23% have a bachelor’s or higher.

The senior class at Tech High plan to contribute to the number of African Americans with college degrees. Below is a list of what the seniors plan on doing after high school.
